Rodrick Thompson’s Journey with The Salvation Army

Jun 16, 2025

When Rodrick Thompson, a Navy veteran and devoted father, made the courageous decision to relocate his family from Oklahoma to Houston, it wasn’t for a job or a change of scenery, it was for the life of his newborn child.

Born with severe medical complications, Rodrick’s baby required urgent and specialized care that was only available in Houston. Without hesitation, Rodrick and his wife left everything behind, their home, community, and support system in pursuit of life-saving treatment for their infant. What they didn’t have was a plan for housing once they arrived.

Despite their uncertainty, the Thompsons moved forward with faith and determination. When they arrived in Houston that’s when they were connected to The Salvation Army’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, a lifeline for veterans experiencing housing instability. Through the SSVF program, Rodrick met Abraham Solis, a dedicated case manager who worked closely with the family. Abraham quickly sprang into action, helping the Thompsons secure safe, stable housing while also addressing their immediate needs. He provided the encouragement and resources they needed to rebuild.

With stability at home, Rodrick was able to return to work in his skilled trade, and the Thompsons could focus on what mattered most, their child’s recovery. Miraculously, their baby is now home, healthy, and thriving.

Today, the Thompson family is deeply rooted in Houston. What began as a journey filled with fear and uncertainty has transformed into a story of resilience, faith, and new beginnings. Rodrick continues to provide for his family, and their home is now a place of peace and promise.

The Thompsons’ story is a powerful reminder of why The Salvation Army exists—to offer help, hope, and healing to those in their greatest moments of need.
