NATIONAL DONUT DAY & THE SALVATION ARMY
National Donut Day was first celebrated in Chicago in 1938 to commemorate the work of "donut lassies," female Salvation Army volunteers who provided supplies, stamps, meals, and of course, donuts to soldiers at the front lines during World War I. The commemoration also raised awareness about The Salvation Army's social services and raised funds for the needy during the Great Depression.
Today, the first Friday of every June marks an important date in US food history and continues to raise awareness about critical services provided by The Salvation Army to those in need every day.
FAST FACTS:
- Approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers provided assistance to US soldiers in France starting in 1917 during WWI.
- With limited resources, these treats were fried, only seven at a time.
- The Salvation Army's Ensign, Margaret Sheldon & Adjutant, Helen Purviance are credited for frying donuts in soldier's helmets near the front lines as a quick treat.
