Serving Smiles by the Dozen
Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day is a sweet time to celebrate America’s heroes. The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938 to help the needy during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. On June 4, The Salvation Army continues this tradition that was started more than 80 years ago.
