The “Street Store” campaign will be in Mobile, AL, Saturday June 6th.

Mobile’s homeless get a shopping spree, for FREE!

‘The Street Store’ concept will make the shopping spree possible on Saturday June 6th at the Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama headquarters at 1009 Dauphin Street from 12-4 p.m.  (Set up 10-12)

The Street Store was created in collaboration with a South African shelter in January 2014.  The Street Store is a pop-up store that offers free donated clothes to the homeless.

Citizens are encouraged to donate by dropping off gently worn or new clothes and shoes they no longer wear at the street store June 6th.

The Street Store concept has been adopted by cities around the world on several continents and now it’s come to Mobile.  The idea is to help those less fortunate, but also provide the homeless the chance to choose what they get to wear.

The Aldersgate United Methodist Church is spearheading the Street Store event in conjunction with the Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama.

“We are reaching out to assist an image of society that people normally turn the eyes away from or click to another channel.  Street Store gives those in need one normal life experience: shopping, something we take for granted.  I believe this is exactly what Christ meant when he asked us to question, what does love require of us? This is Matthew 25:35-36″ said Morgan Byrd, organizer.

“There are hundreds of homeless people in our community.  The Salvation Army provides assistance to many of them everyday.  Efforts like this helps us fulfill our mission as servants of God, to better the lives of others.” said Major Mark Brown, Area Commander, The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabamaa.

The Street Store is on Saturday, June 6th, from 12-4 p.m. at Salvation Army Area Command at 1009 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36604.

*The media is invited to attend the donation event.*
