SALVATION ARMY OPENING AS EMERGENCY SHELTER FROM COLD WEATHER
Mobile, AL (January 5, 2015) – With temperatures expected to dip into the 30s and 20s – possibly even the teens – this week, The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama will be opening our doors as an overnight cold weather emergency shelter for homeless men. We are planning on continuing the emergency shelter operation through Friday night/Saturday morning.
Every night, we shelter 28 men off the streets in our transient dorm beds. This is in addition to more than 120 men, women and children who stay with us every night as part of our residential homeless and addiction recovery programs. Then during emergency operations, we have 150 cots that can be placed throughout our building for those seeking safe shelter. Our dinner is open to anyone needing a warm meal every day, and all who stay overnight will receive a hot breakfast in the morning.
The Salvation Army’s shelter is located at 1009 Dauphin Street. We will also help transport homeless Baldwin County residents in need of shelter to our Dauphin Street facility. Those in need can call 251-438-1625, and arrangements will be made.
PROVIDED 20 NIGHTS OF COLD WEATHER SHELTER THIS WINTER
Anytime temperatures dip below 40 degrees, The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama opens our overnight emergency shelter – providing dinner, a warm place to sleep, and a hot breakfast to those in need. Already this winter, we have provided more than 20 nights of emergency shelter from the cold. Just during these emergency operations, we’ve sheltered more than 950 people and served more than 2,000 meals. All of which is in addition to the nearly 120 men, women and children that stay with us every night in our residential programs.
The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama is in need of monetary donations to make this life-saving shelter available to our neighbors in need. During winter months, our gas and powerbills increase by $800-1300. Our food costs also increase as we serve more meals to those seeking shelter. And we have more maintenance needs, like a shower that currently needs repair.
We will also accept donations of blankets, jackets, hats and socks which will be given out to those in need.
Donations can be brought or mailed to our office at 1009 Dauphin Street. Donations can also be made online at www.SACoastAL.org or via phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
