Pastor John Lovelace Cantelow III

Reverend Keith D. Thompson

Pastor Cantelow began his work in the ministry in 1990 at Sixth Avenue Baptist, serving as assistant to the pastor, under the leadership of Dr. John Thomas Porter. In 1994, he became an associate pastor at Sixth Avenue and continued serving in that capacity until 1999 when he was called to pastor the Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church in Tuskegee, Alabama. In 2011, Pastor Cantelow became Pastor of the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church.

Pastor Cantelow grew up in Titusville and completed his undergraduate studies in 1991 at the University of Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. In 1994, he completed his Master of Divinity degree at the Beeson Divinity School of Samford University and in 2016, he completed his Doctor of Divinity degree at Beeson. Pastor Cantelow currently serves as a board member of The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham, Samford University and Macedonia Ministries.

Rev. Keith D. Thompson became the Senior Minister of Canterbury United Methodist Church July 1st, 2018. Prior to coming to Canterbury, Rev. Thompson served as the Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Birmingham for nine years, bringing unprecedented growth and vibrancy to a church that was previously in the midst of multiple decades of decline.

Rev. Thompson is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, holds a Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University, along with a Master of Divinity degree in Community Counseling from the University of Alabama. Rev. Thompson is also a graduate of the Living School, a three year program taught through Richard Rohr’s Center for Contemplation and Action. Rev. Thompson serves on multiple boards within the community, and was a member of the 2020 class of Leadership Birmingham.
