Significant Increase in Number of Families Seeking Food Assistance Due to COVID-19

The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham is holding weekly food distribution with a few safety changes to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The drive-through food distribution is held on Wednesday and Thursday of each week, serving over 100 families each day. The need for food assistance is growing and there is a significant increase in demand for social services from individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. Emergency assistance is also provided by appointment at the Service Center in Bessemer and the Alabaster Corps in Shelby County.

“The Salvation Army remains steadfast in our mission to meet human needs in His name. Providing food for hungry families is a basic need that we are meeting as so many families are facing job loss, financial crisis and food insecurity,” said Major Charles Powell, Area Commander. “We want to help fill the gap for these families during this time.”

The increase in demand for food assistance has grown by over 300% and this means we need community support in order to continue to meet this need and fill the gap for hungry neighbors. Each food bag contains food for a family for approximately a week and includes non-perishable items and fresh produce if available.
