The Birmingham Salvation Army provides several services that address food and economic challenges during the COVID -19 pandemic.

Drive-In Food Pantry

Our drive-in food pantry is available for any Jefferson County resident in need of food. Food is distributed every Wednesday, 9 AM-11 AM at the Center of Hope, located at 2015 26th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 3523 and on Thursdays at 10 am -12 pm. at 525 13th Street North, Bessemer. For more information regarding the Bessemer center call 205-425-4303.

Please note that you must provide photo ID and proof of residency in Jefferson County (Includes a 2020 a lease or rent agreement or utility bill, including power, gas or water bill). Households may receive groceries weekly.

Financial Assistance

You also may be eligible to receive financial assistance in paying your rent, mortgage, and/or utility bills. This assistance is available for families or individuals residing in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Chilton Counties. Please contact The Salvation Army at 205-328-4536- Monday – Friday between 9 AM – 4 PM for more information.

The following information is required for financial assistance:
1. Proof of loss of wages due to COVID-19 (Letter proving layoff, furlough, or loss of job due to closure)
2. Photo ID
3. Past due utility bill with your name or spouse’s  name
4. Copy of rent or mortgage agreement with late payment notice or eviction notice
5. Only one person per household may apply for financial assistance

COVID Emergency Assistance

The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham is offering COVID-19 emergency assistance for Jefferson County residents living outside the city limits of Birmingham, Bessemer, Helena, and Sumiton.  Eligible Applicants can be assisted with rent and/or utilities, including water, sewer, electric, and gas.  The funds are made available from a Community Development Block Grant from The Jefferson County Commission.

Guidelines:

  • You must have documented proof of income loss due to COVID (must show documentation listed below)
  • You must be a resident of Jefferson County outside of the city limits of Birmingham, Bessemer, Helena, and Sumiton.

Documentation Needed to Complete Assistance:

  • COVID-19 letter from employer (letter must include company’s name, address, phone number and contact person. The letter must state that you lost income due to COVID, the date your income lost started and the letter must be signed)
  • Social Security cards
  • Check stubs for job that was affected by COVID (at least 2)
  • Current proof of income or no income
  • Picture ID for everyone 21 or older
  • Social Security cards for everyone
  • Current proof of income or no income
  • Utility bill(s) (if applicable)
  • Past due or late notice from landlord (This item must include, past due amounts, the month(s) that’s past due, Client’s name and property address. If more than one month is due, charges must be itemized.
  • Lease
