Nestled among the hardwoods and rolling bluffs on the edge of the Mississippi Delta near Lexington, Mississippi, rests The Salvation Army's Camp Hidden Lake.
Named for the lake hidden deep within the property, the camp provides camping experiences for underprivileged children and youth, adults and seniors. Each summer, hundreds of children and youth descend upon Camp Hidden Lake for life changing camp experiences. From music, performing arts, recreational and outdoor experiences to spiritual formations, the goal of Camp Hidden Lake is holistic ministry that strengthens the body, soul, and mind. Long hot summer camp days, a dip in the pool, star-filled nights, camp fires, roasted marshmallows, pillow fights, cabin devotions, emblem work, seeing old friends, making new ones. Expanding horizons and creating memories. That's what camp is about. For more than 100 years, The Salvation Army has recognized the value of camping and has witnessed the difference it can make in people's lives. For an underprivileged child who's only known city concrete, the blare of car horns and whirl of mass transit, it opens up an entirely new world.
For those inclined towards music and the arts, there are camps geared to provide young people with the basics of music theory and the fundamentals of becoming proficient musicians. For the more well-seasoned, there are camps specifically outlined to assist advanced musicians refine their craft further. Teen camps feature organized sports, value-oriented programs and classes that address life issues to assist them as they navigate through challenging years. Children who participate in The Salvation Army's character-building ministries in their own hometowns come to camp to learn new skills and increase their knowledge while having fun earning emblems.
The variety of camps is amazing, but they all provide a gorgeous setting, a caring environment and activities that wholly enrich life. Whether learning to swim, baiting a hook for the first time or discovering new wonders while hiking a nature trail, learning is a big part of the camp experience. Along the way, many learn something even more wonderful. They learn how very special they are and in the process they gain self-confidence, enthusiasm and courage and they also learn about community. The camp experience allows them to more fully understand the importance of working together for a common good and pulling together for something far bigger than themselves. And the entire camping experience is founded upon Godly, Christ-centered principles emphasizing our mighty and wonderful God and the difference He can make in their lives and in our world. There's a big world out there just waiting to be discovered! Camp is a great place to start.
