Mission 66 Diner
In September 2007, two churches, Morning Star Seventh Day Adventist and The Salvation Army, started a modest outreach to seniors in the Mission 66 Community on Monday and Wednesday each week. The goal was simple: provide a wholesome meal and quality fellowship. We served 5 meals that first day.
We are in need of churches and organizations to help us operate the Diner 5 days a week. Some groups take one day each month, while others sponsor all of a certain weekday each month (e.g. every Tuesday – Thank you Presbyterian churches). For more information, call 601.636.2706 and ask for our Social Service Worker.
The Mission 66 Diner now serves between 50-80 meals most weekdays, and, while targeting Senior Citizens, no one is turned away.
Community Thanksgiving Meal
With the birth of the Diner came the revival of a Vicksburg tradition— The Community Thanksgiving Meal— which provides a traditional turkey dinner to those in need in our community.
This year, the Walmart Foundation made it possible for us to serve nearly 200 meals for people in Vicksburg and Port Gibson, MS. We are also thankful to the volunteers who came out to serve the less fortunate in our community.
We look forward to a special time of community fellowship this Thanksgiving. If you wish to help, check out the “How You Can Help” section at the bottom of the page.
Emergency Food Boxes
For those who are in emergency situations, family food boxes are available to assist with about a week’s worth of food. The Walmart Foundation is providing funds to help us ensure that nutritional food is included in these boxes.
