Saints Alive! Senior Adult Program
Our program consists of 122 senior adults ages 55 and over, who live mostly in the 71101 zip code area and others are transported by The Salvation Army bus from Greenwood Rd, Jewella, Mooretown, Queensborough, Hollywood Heights, Stoner Hill and Allendale.
Most of the senior adults attending the program live on a low fixed monthly income. Seventy-eight of our seniors have an annual income of $14,999.00 which is at or below the national poverty level.
Some daily problems that these seniors face is loneliness, fear, lack of personal safety, lack of physical activity, lack of mental activity and poor nutrition due to poor knowledge about proper nutrition and lack of food due to their low income.
Our program attempts to enhance their physical well-being and emotional health by providing a safe and positive environment for recreation, entertainment and education. It also provides nutritious meals, dietary instruction and counseling. Saints Alive! also challenges participants mentally to prevent social isolation and loneliness.
Our daily attendance for this program is 40 to 50 individuals. Each senior receives a free continental breakfast and hot lunch each day as well as a planned program. In addition to this 21 homebound seniors get a lunch delivered to them Monday-Friday and on Sunday.
Our seniors stay active and we plan many outings for them throughout the year. Each October we take them to The Salvation Army Camp Hidden Lake in Mississippi for a fun–filled weekend planned just for them. We also take them to The Louisiana State Fair, various health fairs, Red River Revel, fishing trips, lunch outings and various day trips.
