– National Donut Day Friday, June 2
Shreveport, LA. (May 20, 2017) – The Salvation Army of Northwest Louisiana will celebrate National Donut Day on June 2, 2017, in partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts of Shreveport-Bossier. The idea for the donut as we know it is credited to The Salvation Army “Lassies” who served donuts and coffee to the soldiers in the trenches in France during World War I. Salvation Army Lassies also provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes mending and home-cooked meals for the soldiers on the front lines. The first Donut Day was held during the Great Depression as a way to bring awareness to the social programs of the Salvation Army. Today The Salvation Army continues to provide care and comfort to thousands of people each year who battle hunger, homelessness, loneliness and those struck by disaster.
In “the trenches” 2015, The Salvation Army of Northwest Louisiana provided 30,327 nights shelter to 1,184 people, served 126,998 shelter meals, served 5,661 meals to the home-bound, provided 230 veterans with transitional housing and counseling, provided groceries to 481 families, issued 1,498 clothing vouchers, assisted 169 families with utility assistance, provided rental assistance to 114 families and provided Christmas for 2,725 children.
In celebration of National Donut Day, The Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary will be serving free donuts and coffee, courtesy of Dunkin’ Donuts, to Veterans at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center from 8:30 am until 10 AM . “This is a way to thank these Veterans for their service to our country as we remember and honor the thousands and thousands of volunteers who have served the Veterans over the past 100 years thorough The Salvation Army,” says Major Ed Binnix, commanding officer of The Salvation Army, “We appreciate Dunkin’ Donuts for being a part of this event.” Donations can be made to the Salvation Army on line at www.SalvationArmyShreveport.Org or on The Salvation Army facebook page.
