Funeral service for John Wallace Rhodes were held at The Salvation Army (Shreveport) chapel at 200 E. Stoner Avenue at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, with Major Ed Binnix and Reverend Terrance Trammell officiating. Burial is in the Atkins Cemetery in Athens, LA.
John was born on October 9th, 1954 in Monroe, LA to parents William C. “Bill” Rhodes and Ruby Mae (Smith) Rhodes. He graduated high school in Abilene, Texas and went on to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. Growing up, John was known for his love of music and his skill for playing the drums.
In 1998, John became a member of The Salvation Army of Northwest Louisiana’s maintenance staff. He maintained his position there for 18 years in various forms, caring for the Shreveport Corps, The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, and the Merkle Center of Hope homeless shelter. As one of its longest-serving employees, John was a valued member of The Salvation Army staff and was kind and considerate toward everyone he met within its walls.
John passed away at Claiborne Healthcare Center in Shreveport on March 5th, 2017 with family and friends by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ruby Rhodes, and is survived by his brother, Steve Rhodes and his wife Julie, of Georgetown, TX, and two nieces, Brittany Rhodes Blanton and Ashley Rhodes Wonderly, also of Georgetown, TX. Pall bearers were DeCedric Burns, Charles Law, Timothy McConnell, Valentino Morris, Chris Paladino, and Steve Rhodes.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for memorial donations to be sent to The Salvation Army of NWLA, a place John loved and cared for in so many capacities (200 E. Stoner Avenue; Shreveport, LA 71101.) The family also extends its gratitude to the staff and nurses at Claiborne Healthcare Center and Life Path Hospice for their compassionate care.
