Meet Ernest – A Story of Hope

May 21, 2025

When Ernest walked through the doors of The Salvation Army in Lake Charles, he carried more than a worn-out backpack. He carried exhaustion. Hunger. A sense of being invisible.

“I came here with nothing,” Ernest says. “I was tired of being cold, tired of being hungry, tired of being forgotten.”

Homelessness had taken its toll. Each day on the streets there was a fight to survive—with no guarantee of a meal, a place to sleep, or even a kind word. But inside the shelter, Ernest found something he hadn’t experienced in a long time: hope.

“They didn’t treat me like a number,” he recalls. “They saw me. They listened. They helped me believe in myself again.”

"They helped me believe in myself again."

With the support of The Salvation Army staff and a renewed sense of purpose, Ernest began taking steps to rebuild his life. He found stability in a warm bed, strength in spiritual guidance, and encouragement in the people who cared enough to stand beside him.

Major Michael Knott, Corps Officer in Lake Charles, remembers Ernest’s first few days. “He came in carrying the weight of trauma and uncertainty,” he says. “But our goal is always the same: to provide more than just shelter. We want to help people rediscover their value by helping them start over.”

Today, Ernest has a safe place to sleep and a plan for the future. He’s working toward employment, staying connected with mentors, and sharing his story in the hope that others might be inspired to ask for help too.

“I’m not where I want to be yet,” he says, “but I’m not where I used to be. And that means something.”

Because of generous donors and compassionate supporters, people like Ernest can find their footing and walk a new path. At The Salvation Army, every meal served, every bed offered, and every conversation held is a step toward restoration and redemption.
